great shell, but don't expect to wear a helmet with the hood. Great shell. I took it to Breckenridge with temperatures ranging from 5-20 with gust of 30mph winds. Didn't feel a thing. BUT...The hood is not compatible with a helmet (Giro 9). I was a little bummed about this fact. The wind was so cold, that I would have liked to put the hood over my helmet. The zippers are impossible to work with gloves (Marmot seems to have them beat on this with the little rubber grabbers on their zippers).
Still glad I bought it.

One of the best shells made I have been looking for a new shell that can be worn skiing as well as cooler temperatures that was water proof looked good and wore well. There is really no comparison to the quality of Arcteryx clothing so I will concentrate on what this model offers. I tried the shells like beta, alpha and theta and the thicker shells for snow sport. I disregarded the insulated shells since they are warmer and limits their use to winter only.
The hard shells like alpha, theta etc felt to thin to wear unless is used for technical reasons. This left the scorpion, the sidewinder and the stingray. The Sidewinder did not appeal to me due to the external material that it is not as appealing, in the opposite end the scorpion does not seem to have the rugged exterior that the stingray has. The stingray has a smooth yet rough exterior that it is very nice to the touch and while providing the jacted with a sense of durability. The sleeves have a velcro attachment that provides a very nice look to it, the linning is thin enough to be worn on srping and fall and ligth enough to layer for warm ski days while it provide the room to layer up for those cold skiing days. Overall is a wonderfull jacket that will provide use over the 3 seasons.

The Kind of Ski Jackets This jacket is the highlight of my closet. It has a soft feel to it, yet it's built for the harshest conditions that mother nature can throw at you. I've worn this to the top of Mt. Baker during some pretty harsh conditions and it kept the ice and moisture on the outside where it belongs. Arcteryx makes the best quality jackets around...they aren't cheap, but I consider this an investment for life.

excellent Most windproof and comfortable ski shell I have had. Quality is great. very light weight, articulated elbows and cut so you can move arms over your head without lifting the body of the jacket. hood fits over a helmet. looks good. body of the shell fits reallty well for a lean build, without a lot of extra material which I like. If you are husky you might fit better in the sidewinder, but this is perfect for my build. 5 stars

Great Lightweight & Waterproof Jacket High quality finish is what one would expect from Arc'teryx. Extremely comfortable. Only downside for me was the arm length, which I found to be longer than with other my other 7 Arc'teryx jackets.

Very nice jacket The jacket is of obviously high quality and is extremely stylish. It also does well in the rain. My only problem is that it's not particularly warm, even with an Arcteryx fleece and EMS base layer, when the weather is 20 degrees and blowing. For that, I'm still putting on my puffy down jacket. I guess I'd hoped I could get away with something like this on the cold days. Maybe I'm just to cold blooded, but I personally need more than this jacket offers.

Best of All Possible Combinations Trade offs are what we as buyers tend to scrutinize the most. Breathability versus waterproofing & wind blocking is a major one for me, and the Stingray Jacket has just the right balance for my needs. It breathes well enough for some hiking. Stops the wind from cutting to the bone at the top of the ridge you just hiked to, you don't even know its on when you ski down, & if you do stuff your body into the powder you'll come out dry. Water proofing is not an issue with this jacket. At 6"3", 225 lbs the XL fits just fine even with 3 baselayers on. I've got $600.00 Spyder & Phoenix jackets that take in water like a sponge & a Arc'teryx Sidewinder that lets the wind penetrate to the core. I only need one jacket now, i've found "my" jacket with the Best of All Combinations.

Great Jacket , but... Finish is impeccable. The fabric was supple and all the zips were flexible and worked easily. Fit through the body was snug but still allowed ample movement. Fit in the shoulders and arms was outstanding with plenty of room. However, the neck area was tight when zipped up all the way with a zip-T neck and Polartech 200 top, and I don't have a huge neck (15 1/2 inch). With my helmet on and the jacket zipped up, the neck area was uncomfortably constricting around the strap area. As mentioned in other posts, while the hood fit over my helmet, it was pretty snug and restricted flexing my neck. For those two reasons, I had to very reluctantly return it. It almost broke my heart since the rest of the jacket is impeccably made and fit great. Plus the cricket/gator color was a killer.

MOBILITY The fabric lends to incredible mobility. It is as effective as a hardshell, but it has the athletic fit of a softshell. The only reason I would subtract one star is the warmth factor. This jacket does a great job of kicking out the wind, but you need to layer for real warmth. Breath ability is great with this. It might not have XCR or Schoeller Nanosphere Technology, but it has proven to be quite effective at keeping me dry.
I would also like better zippers. The laminated zips make it so difficult to work when you have gloves on.
Overall this is a great jacket, and if not for Arcteryx's great warranty I would definitely buy again.

best jacket made by Arc'Teryx period! THIS JACKET IS GREAT. I LOVE TO WEAR IT. I LIKE THE FACT THAT WHEN I WEAR IT DURING WINDY WEATHER, THE WIND DOESN'T ADVERSELY AFFECT MY BODY; THIS JACKET KEEPS ME WARM. HAS ENOUGH POCKETS--4-TO STORE ANYTHING YOU WISH. THE TWO HANDWARMER POCKETS ARE HUGE, AND THE POCKET ON THE LEFT SLEEVE IS CONVENIENT AS WELL. THE CINCH CORDS DO THERE JOB, AND THE CINCH CORD ON THE HOOD ALLOWS YOU TO TIGHTEN THE HOOD AS YOU SO DESIRE. I JUST LOVE THIS JACKET--OH AND IF YOU CAN, GET THE GUNMETAL COLOR, I LOOKS GREAT. I JUST LOVE THIS JACKET, I DON'T THINK I WILL BUY ANOTHER JACKET AS LONG AS I LIVE. THE JACKET IS SOMEWHAT PRICY, BUT IF YOU CAN SHOP AROUND FOR A CHEAPER, PRICE AND THEN COME BACK TO ALTREC; THEY HAVE THE BEST PRICE MATCH POLICY AROUND!

A great shell for what it was designed for. The review at top is odd: "Almost replaces the need to have a hardshell." This is a hardshell; they have just incorporated a "softer" outer fabric rather that the heavier, stiffer outer shell found on most of their stuff.
It's not XCR so it is 25% less breathable. Big deal. Arc'teryx stuff was designed after climbing first and breathabilty would be a far great consideration in that sport rather than in bounds skiing, which is where their target market lies for this jacket.
It's a far less roomy shell than the Sidewinder so your actual size, although ample in arm lenth will not be as accommodating through the body and body length is also a couple of inches shorter than the same size Sidewinder.
I would imagine the outer fabric is very durable, more so than 99% of us would require, but not like the Sidewinder SV. So if you're doing alot of true backcountry skinning or hiking with your skies/board strapped on etc, I would recommend the breathability and tougher shell of the Sidewinder SV over this unit.
Honestly, what is there not to like about Arc'teryx? Their stuff could just as easily hang in a museaum as art; it's really that nicely made. It's always very simple, with beautiful, consisitent construction with no frills. I have found frills are almost always unecessary and just add bulk.
Unlike the last review, get any color other than the grey. Everybody has it. Seriously, all of the colors look great in the Stingrays and I feel this is the first shell in Arc's line that not only looks hardcore, but is also really slick looking.
