Regarded by experts and running enthusiasts as Montrail's most supportive and stable training shoe, the Hardrock is also incredibly comfortable and ideal for those who dare to run further than a 70-mile week. Inside the Hardrock is a full-length TerraFlex AR protection plate identical to the plate found in the award-winning Montrail Kinabalu, but unlike the Kinabalu the Hardrock has gel in the forefoot to help cushion your feet on long runs. Lightweight airmesh along the tops and sides of the upper help you air it out when the competition heats up.
Protected my feet and ankles at the very rocky 2008 ZG 50k.
I registered for the Zane Grey 50k held in April. It promised to be very rocky and rugged. After researching this type of shoe I chose the Hardrock based on other reviews. Being from coastal GA. I did not really understand what a rocky trail run was. I found out. I believe if were not for the Hardrock I could not have completed. The shoe protected my feet fom the extremely rocky trail. My ankle rolled 5 times but the shoe prevented it from being extreme. My shoes were slightly tight due to my not sizing up. Not good for a 50k (+2 miles). If I were to ever run a course like that again (not likely)I would trust the Hardrock (1/2 or 1 size up)to protect me. Thanks Montrail David Haney Brunswick, GA.
Great product, much more comfortable than a standard running sho
These are shoes that have excellent support, cushioning and fore-foot protection. They have great support for trail running and even lite backpacking. Great cushioning, stability and traction.
Great value
While I agree they are a little heavy, they are great shoes for light hikes and are very supportive for runs. They also provide excellent cushioning and are very durable.

Best for rocky, tough runs
Montrail Hardrocks are great shoes for long runs on rocky trails where adequate support and protection are critical. Though not the lightest shoes, they are bomber.
Great trail runners
Just what I was looking for for running on rocky trails in the mountains - the sole protected by a full length TPU plate to prevent sharp rocks from poking at your feet while under the plate is plenty of cushioning for running on harder surfaces. They are a touch heavy for running shoes but the main downside might be the fit - I had to send mine back and get a half size larger than I normally wear in running shoes.
Great Shoes
The Montrail Hardrocks are a great shoe for UL hiking trips and trail running. The shoes are tough, breathable and stable. Although not the lightest they protect the feet well, dry fast and are very durable. Size up a half size.
For me, they're the best trail runner around!
I'm on my third pair of Hard Rock's and they have proven their worth time and time again. Great protection from the rocks and such strewn along the trail. Shoes firmly hold foot without being suffocating. These shoes will be taking me from start to finish at this years Squaw Peak 50 Mile Trail Run! Love 'em!
Great Shoes
I love these shoes! They feel good on my feet, nice and stable, not too loose, and not too tight.Great traction,it won't be my last pair.
Hiking/Trail Running Wonder
Great shoe for every outdoor adventure requiring some stability. Ditto that they are narrow at first but they break in nicely. Recommended
Montrail Hardrock
I am very impressed with the Montrail hardrock. I feel the hardrock is superior to Brooks "Beast" as a motion control sneaker. Without a doubt the best on the market.
Excels at rocky trails
These shoes, while being a bit heavy, excel at handling rough, rocky terrain. They offer good protection and support for moderate pronators. I have owned 4 different pairs of these shoes and continue to look to these as my go-to trail-running shoe.
Awesome stability, great traction. All in all, wonderful shoe
My dad is absolutely thrilled by this purchase. High in stability and great traction... this shoe is a must for trail runners.
Excellent trail runner, light hiker etc...
The hardrock is an outstanding trail runner / light hiker. Great stability, holds the heal well and nice and wide. This is my 2nd pair and won't be my last...
Best trail shoes I have ever had
These are Montrails, so you do have to break them in a bit but they feel better and my body likes them better than anything Ive ever had.
Damn near perfect
Best trail shoe I've ever owned, bar none.
If you are a trail runner this is a shoe worth looking into
I switched to the Hardrock after suffering an overuse running injury on the my right knee. If you have never tried on these shoes the first thing you're going to notice (even before hitting the trail) are the cushioning properties. The shoe also has unbeleivable traction control and great arch support (I have high arches). They are great for running technical trails especially downhill the shoe seems to "glue" on to the terrian and provide excellent stablity. I bought a pair of wides and they fit perfect.
It does takes a couple of weeks to break them in. I did an easy 6 mile trail run the first couple of days and the outside of my calves felt sore after the run. But once I broke them in it was not a problem anymore. I also didn't care too much for the standard insoles that came with the shoe - but I usually replace them with sorbothanes anyway so it was not a problem for me.
My overall view is this is a great trail running shoe and it seems have all the necessary properties a trail runner needs - cushioning, stability and a great fit.
Wide Foot
These fit my wide foot very well and accomaodate my othotics too. I am so happy to have a trail running show with a wide toe box. Thanks Montrail.
Very nice shoeExcellent
Extended sizes are rare (Mens's 13 wide). Would be nice if a Gore-tex model was offered as well.
A Classic!
I've worn these for everything from running on rough trails to dayhiking to long days at work on a concrete floor. My verdict: the best midweight trail runner on the market.
Excellent Shoe
Good support and stability. I wear them for walks of about six miles and I am very satisfied.
Top of the heap
Great trail running shoe, have been wearing Hardrocks for the last 2 years. I have run 100 mile,50 mile, and 50K races in them. My feet always feel comfortable, secure, and protected. No blisters are a plus***. I hope Montrail never changes them.
Comfortable and waterproof
I like them alot. Have kept my feet dry and no blisters. I think I will use them on the JMT this August.
Magnificent is all I can say!
If you are looking for a trail shoe that has more support, cushioning, fore-foot protection, lacing options, comfort... don't bother looking at anything else. (It's exceptionally light too!) I hate to give anything a 5-star ratings as nothing should be perfect but I simply can't find a fault. (At most I can only ask for a few more air mesh bits to help foot cooling although I haven't had a moisture problem with them yet). I get agravated metatarsal pads and these are currently the only shoes that I can run in without any discomfort whatsoever. The heel cushioning is excellent even on hard concrete surfaces and there is loads of protection on the tongue to protect the top of your foot from the laces.
Much better than my Solomon (4-star) XA Pro II and vastly better than my TNF Ultra XCRs (2-star).
If anyone from Montrail ever reads this review and they are designing their next model, please, please, please develop a gaiter that is compatible (like the TNF scree gaiter) with this shoe.
Great Shoes
These shoes are great performers. I love the snug fit and stiffer than normal sole. I found them to run true to size. The have great support for trail runner and even ultra-lite backpacking. The only thing I'd add is Gore-Tex so I could hike in wet weather. Montrail now makes a Mt. Mist XCR which is a Hardrock sole with a Highline upper.
Finally a great shoe
Finally after many years and many shoes I have found a shoe to replace my old pair of asics nandi's. They have worked well in all trail conditions - mud, snow, ice, and dry. Great cushioning, stability and traction.
great product
Great product, much more comfortable than a standard running shoe. I appreciate the fact that it comes in wide width too.
Comfortable
I have worn these for running and around for almost a year. The sole is worn through to the midsole on the outer right of the heels. They are the most comfy shoes I've ever had. At work, on my feet 9 hours a day, no problem. First shoes to do that. They are good for long runs, cushy, decent traction, ventilation. I do 4-8 milers, no big deal, but these work well. About 20-30 miles a week. I have the Vitesses too but these are better b/c they are more comfortable, better traction, and way more foot protection. The Vitesses are very light and nimble shoes, but are pretty foundationless.
Hardrock Rocks!!
Just purchased these great shoes, exceptional traction, stability/motion control, and cushioning, especially for larger runners like myself! If you are a larger runner who pronates, look no further! Buy, buy, buy!!!!
Great support & comfort, but wore quickly
The footbed & sole provides solid protection for trail hazards, and the uppers give great support, especially on hills. My last pair showed obvious signs of wear at about 150 miles, but I'm only now ready to retire them [and get another pair] a hundred miles later.
Nice off-road running/hiking shoes
Overall nice shoes. The heel looks bulky but adds to the stability of the shoe, something I needed for support. At first they felt a bit narrow, but having had them for a few weeks they molded to my feet.
Nice but a bit on the heavy side.
These shoes are well made and comfortable. However, their weight makes them more suitable as hikers than as trail runners.
Great All Around Shoe
These turned out to be a great trail running, trekking shoe but were REALLY hard for the first few wears. Breaking them in was a process. When first purchased I could only wear them for a couple of hours at a time before my feet started hurting (which seemed to be "normal" according to my packing shop. However, once I "broke" them in they have been the best trail shoe I have owned.
have'nt worn them outside yet
I first ordered these shoes in size
11 wide and had to return them and get 11.5 wide, which seems to fit me
well. I am not a trail runner by any means but for the last 20 yrs. I have always worn hiking boots or shoes because of the advanced support they offer my severly messed up feet. The only problem with that approach is that now almost no one that makes hiking boots/shoes offers them in a WIDE so when I heard that Montrail makes the Hard Rock wide I decided to give them a try. I had previously had good luck buying Vasque shoes which I loved because they were very comfortable. Now Vasque no longer offers a wide low hiking shoe so,for wide feet, Montrail is pretty much the only one making a wide low shoe. Although these are wides they still feel a little tight on my feet so I am not wearing them outside yet until I am sure they will be comfortable. They are very good looking and well made and other than feeling slightly tight are fairly comfortable. I purchased a pr. of Montrail Torre GTX boots a
few months ago and had to return them and get a half size larger pr. but those are super comfortable albeit a bit hot in southern Arizona summer. Anyway, based on how well the Torre GTX felt I think I will be very happy
with these Hardrocks and I have to applaud Montrail for offering a solution for those of us with wide feet! Also, Altrec provided a very easy return process when I
had to switch from size 11 to 11.5 (FREE return shipping-can't
touch that!) and I will most definetely shop here again!!!
Supportiv, but not very cushioning
I don't know what it is exactly, but the bottom of my feet and my toes seem to go somewhat numb when I run in these shoes. The first day I had them, my knees bothered me, and they were pretty uncomfortable. But after the break-in period, my knees are fine again, but there's something about these shoes that doesn't quite fit me correctly. I have a rather high arch, and can't wear other brands, like Solomon, at all, without cramping and numbness. I should have stuck with Nike.
