Stout weather protection that packs down small when the sun reappears, the Mountain Hardware Men's Epic Jacket is ideal for superlight backcountry trips. The Conduit Silk waterproof and breathable coating has a smooth, dry interior feel, while pit zips and venting mesh front pockets allow for plenty of air circulation when pushing on to high camp with a full backpack. The attached ergonomic hood has a one handed, single pull, adjustment system, making it easy to operate when wearing gloves or mitts.
perfect jacket
great jacket, pretty breathable, great trim fit. i find myself between Small and medium, so i sized up to Med and it fits perfect. huge hood is great and accommodating, one-handed pull string keeps it in check. keeps my stuff dry, and it dries with a quickness. buy it
good jacket for the price.
I had this jacket for about two years and kept me dry during the raining season of northern Cal. After the two years the Conduit coasting start to peel off. Send it back to MH for warranty. Good customer service so far. MH said will replace it with a Cohesion jacket.
True Mountain Hardwear Quality
Purchased the Epic due to excessive business travel around the globe and the ability to "pack" an easy, lightweight, and waterproof jacket into my backpack or suitcase. Bottom line, it's exceeded my expectations in both heavy rain and cool weather. For the price, you can't go wrong. FYI, size is true to fit.

Great Performance while drinking beer at the big game
I love this jacket! I am a Big fan of tailgating at the Ol' Alma Mater and this jacket has served me very well. If you are like me and not planning on hiking the Appalachian Trail or going biking in this jacket (BTW, go buy a jacket designed for that use, Genius) you will be greatly pleased- It is light weight, breathes, and offers great protection in the elements. Follow the intructions and treat it as directed. If you're planning on being caught in a downpour spend the $$$ ond get the Gore-tex or buy the PVC raincat and sweat it out. Pounds vs. Performance this is the best deal going.
worth every penny
lightweight, waterproof, nice deep front pockets, with a lifetime guarantee, this is a great raincoat, and great for layering as well...
having just one is unbearable
Bought a second one immediately, light, soft feeling, zippers under the arms to give air when needed, absolutely a wonderful jacket. does keep wind but not the real cold out. has a loose fit and needs that for the easy wearing feeling
Awesome jacket and Perfect Altrec service!
Got the epic to put in my pack to keep me dry when the rain catches me in the wilderness. Super comfortable and packable. Venting solutions at pockets and pit zips are great. Thank you to Altrec for another great deal and great service.
cool
im very pleased with my jacket epic..........i bought mine early 2003 and i'm still using it. still no problem. from climbing to a very hard rain in the philippines. i'ts cool
Excellent 4 Season Jacket!
This jacket is perfect for all seasons. All the details of this jacket are perfect. The pocket is perfectly attatched and very useful, the hood fits well w/ a helmet on. The zippers and seams are very well constructed. You can roll around in the dirt with this with like 10 mountain lions on you, it just wears that well. I use this for all sports incuding biking, kayaking, tennis, and hiking. This is also good for out and about
Phenomenal technical piece
One thing people haven't mentioned is that this jacket is also phenomenal for technical mountain pursuits...climbing, alpine, etc. Only 11 oz, self-stowable, relatively breathable, athletic cut/fit. This is my second Epic jacket.
Great Shell!!!!!!
After receiving the Mountain Hardwear Epic Jacket it was much better by than observed online. Mountain Hardwear gear is always 'top of the line' and the Epic Jacket is of the the same mold!! A Great Buy!!!!!!
mountain hardwear epic jacket
100% waterproof, got caught in a downpour and stayed perfectly dry. jacket is very light and looks stylish too. The only this I didnt like is the front pocket, it could be a little bit bigger. Love this jacket. - Erik
stylish, waterproof and cool
After losing my TNF mountainlight jacket I was in search of a new rain jacket. I like the inside lining (hated the coolmax mesh). The jacket is stylish and kept me dry on raining days. I got a good deal at Adventure's Edge in Arcata, CA. The forks there are great.
Love this jacket
A great jacket. Keeps me dry! Pit zips keep me ventilated! Love It!
Great Pack Jacket
I am very pleased with the performance, weight and quality of the jacket. It will be my main pack, and wading jacket. It was a great deal since I purchased mine on sale for $64.
Awesome Jacket
This jacket is completely waterproof and does not trap in heat.
Waterproof, Breathable and Light!
Simply a great jacket. You won't find better for the price!
well made
I'm 6' and the size large Jacket fits me in the sleeves fine. This is the jacket for you if you need a spring ultralite, that tailored fit. The pants have more practical longer zippers to.
Lightweight and packable
Nice jacket, it can be used for many things, use it as a rain jacket, windbreaker, go a size bigger and use it over a heavy jacket.
great
it snowed and rained the day that I recieved my jacket, I had to put it to the test. the breathability is excellent and the movement is great. I love this jacket and would not trade it for anything else.
A well fitting functional jacket.
I ordered the jacket to replace my military gore-tex when working away from bases. I was really pleased with the fit, I am 5 ft 6 inches and weigh 170lb so I needed a large. At first I thought it would be really long in length, but all was well, fit was perfect. A must have for anyone needing a good water-proof shell.
Beats the Marmot Precip
After having two Marmot Precip wear out within a year I switched to the Epic Jacket. The Epic has great design details and more importantly keeps you dry. It is also light and packable and definately kept the wind off in a recent trip to Patagonia.
Perfect Light Shell
I got this jacket for 80 and it has performed magnificently. Got it for backpacking and mainly mountain biking. Had it on a 3-day in Colorado, on the second day it started hailing, then just rained all night. Sucked. But I popped out my epic jacket, stayed more or less dry (not even gore-tex XCR will keep you dry from sweat while biking), biked back to camp, and wandered around there for about 4 hours in pouring rain. Totally dry. I was indubitably impressed. The breathability is surprisingly good-I'd say the best I've ever tried. Packed size and weight are awesome. As far as downsides, I dunno...my forearms tend to stick to the coating when it's really humid out, but that's in like 90% humidity, 80 degrees in Missouri miserableness...never move here. But the Epic jacket is well worth twice the price.
P.S. The pit zips are the best feature.
Outstanding !
This jacket is near perfect . It is so very lightweight and yet so warm. We live right on the water and especially at this time of the year
the north wind blows long and hard off of the water yet with this on I'm really comfortable and dry.
Fantastic
Breathes incredibly well. I tested inside with a down jacket underneath, barely sweated. With a gore tex jacket you'd be drenched indoors with that set up. Then absolute comfort on a cold, rainy day in the Gunks' in October. The pit zips are a fantastic feature at such a low price. Totally incredible value for a waterproof jacket. The front "GPS" pocket is a little small, but a minor detail.
Lightweight Rain Jacket
When talking about rain jackets, they say that soft shell is supposed to replace the rain jacket. But in the Northwest, I don't think you want to completely give up your rain jacket. Breathable is good for while you are moving, but if you are hiking or backpacking you have to stop eventually and you don't want something that is sorta rain proof. You want waterproof. Having a breathable layer for when you are moving, and then a really waterproof layer for when you stop is what's necessary to stay warm.
Super light weigth totally functional jacket.
I bought it for mountain biking in high alpine terrain where we have lots of surprise weather and quick temperature drops. Light enough to bring, and serious enough to handle some real weather. Haven't had a chance yet to test it out for high aerobic breathabilty yet.
Outstanding jacket
This jacket is not only great looking but it's highly functional. When it's chilly & pouring down rain this jacket is the one I reach for, because there is no way I'll get wet while wearing the Epic from Mountain Hardwear. It's so very light that when it's packed you don't even realize it's there. You can't go wrong with this outstanding jacket.
Great qaulity and features
I bought this as emergency rain gear for fly-fishing and could not be happier. The stretch in the sleeves is great for casting, and the other technical features are useful. Even the right color (sage). Light-weight and well made -- I expect to have it for years.
BUY THIS COAT, IT WORKS
This jacket is the new direction of rain protection. Gore-tex is an amazing product, but lightweight minimalist outerwear is the way to go. I wear this jacket in any weather, and the vents keep me cool when its humid. I wore the Epic for a month in Alaska and it performed as well if not better than the 300-500 dollar parkas others in my company wore. Another benefit is that my Epic jacket and Epic pants (also great) together compressed to smaller than their parkas alone. You wont be dissapointed with this product
Absolutely perfect
THis jacket is the summation of perfect rainwear. I wore it for a week straight in Colorado in heavy rain, and I stayed dry and actually not too hot. It DOES breathe, and huge pit zips and chest vents work flawlessly. It is actually quite durable, and is utterly waterproof. It is far and away the best jacket ever used for rain. I cannot imagine a better jacket for summer downpours and all-round packable, LIGHT but functional raingear.
Just as desribed! A great piece of equipment!
I have worn this jacket in the rain, wind and snow and it worked just as advertised! I would recommend this jacket to anyone looking for an all-around, good fitting jacket to keep at hand.
great
Great jacket for the minimalist. Haven't been able to use it much thus far because it's still cold but I am looking forward to using it in the spring. The inside of the jacket is soft and doesn't stick to your skin. I have put it under my sink and it looks like it will be very waterproof.
epic in shedding rain
As I wander through the canyon of Stough I cannot help but smile with my Epic Jacket. I am please to announce that this jacket has proven itself on my jaunts along the Pacific Crest Trail. With the extremely lenghty pit zips i am able to reach true hiking homeostatis. In light rain this jacket proved itself in shedding and beading the droplets of consistent percipitation. This jacket has a solid sewn construction. With strategic pocket placements and a rollup hood velcro enclosure this jacket is my new choice in light breathable raingear.
amazing value
this jacket has the qualities of a much more expensive jacket at a very good price:
-waterproof & breathable
-pit zips
-ergo hood that moves w/ your head
-stretch panels
-extremely lightweight
can't say enough about this jacket.
Great Jacket
I'm very happy with the Epic jacket. Its very light weight, comfortable as is breathable. Its everything I was hoping it would be.
An excellent rain top
I just purchased my Epic Jacket and it is the best. I went straight out into a storm and it worked better than i had aniticipated. I really needed a light weight rain jkacket for those summer down pours on the trail and its packablility and light weight are just the thing.
Very good jacket for price
Works great, waterproof and really breathable. I tend to accumulate moisture under waterproof jackets when wearing during exertion. No problem with this jacket. As other reviewers noted, fit is a bit loose for size, while I got an XL, and usually need one, I probably could have gone with an L. Not too happy with the way the hood stows, creates a weird shape against your neck, so I just leave it unstowed. Wish the sleeves had an elastic gathering in addition to the velcro snugger. Love the light weight and stuffability.
Good gear
This is a good jacket. I have used this for about 6 months. It keeps the water out and provides great protection from the elements. It does not feel sticky or clamy. My one complain is the loose fit, would like to see a more athletic fit.
The best $99 rain jacket available
The epic has a great fit and the features you need (pit zips, venting pockets, adequate hood) when it's pouring. You could pay twice as much for a Gore-Tex jacket (Mountain Hardwear has one) but I'm not sure you get a much better jacket than the Epic.
Great jacket
Lighter than I thought it was going to be but it does a great job keeping you nice and dry. Zipper isn't always smooth but otherwise well worth the price specially since it was on sale
Light and comfortable
This jacket is very light and very comfortable. It does a good job at blocking water and wind.
You WILL like this jacket.
I wore the Mountain Hardwear Epic Jacket while camping for one week in temps ranging from 65 to 22 and was very pleased. It is extremely water resistant; we got rained on for an entire day and I was completely dry. It is also very breathable. I like the 3 outer pockets; they unzip enough so that you don't scrape your hands on the teeth and can fit lots but don't feel bulky when empty. I'm very pleased with my purchase and feel that it was money well spent.
Lightweight!
Its been a couple of weeks since I've recieved my Mountain Hardwear Epic Jacket. My intial impression was that the jacket is very lightweight an packable. Secondly, the design is very well thought out. It has separate pit zips with mesh lined chest pockets which can be combined to make for a very breathable jacket. The cuffs are molded and do a nice job of keeping rain out. Overall the jacket seems solidly built, and I expect it to last atleast several seasons of wear.
epic jacket
This jacket has been great so far, kept me dry during a couple of downpoars...only complaint, hood is a little too big...other than that, AWSOME jacket.
works as advertised
Awesome Jacket in so many ways! First off, know I'm a nitpicker and a tough grader, but I love my epic. It fits great, and I wish I had another one size up so I could wear fatty layers under it for winter camping (I thought it'd be only my summer jacket -who knew it'd work so well?).
Also, It has a trim, shorter cut to the torso, which I really like, looks the nuts when you're out on the town.
Two small nits: One, the welded chest pocket (on my version, they may have fixed this) doesn't have one of those truly waterproof zippers, only a sort-of but not-really-totally-waterproof one. Two: twice now, while standing upright in a steady rain, water somehow is getting channeled to the front zipper, and I get a small wet spot right between my nipples. Odd, I think it must just be the way I have the hood adjusted, but I cant' quite figure it out. At any rate, when I'm actually hiking or moving, my body heat easily takes care of it.
Those are fairly minor, I wear this thing all the time in all kinds of weather, and it's so small and light there's never a question of whether to bring it or not. Enjoy!
Good jacket and features
The jacket had lots of great reviews. It has good features for the price. The interior is a bit "rubbery" feeling--I was hoping for a finish that would have a nicer texture. I haven't had the opportunity to check the waterproofness or breathability.
It weighs 14 1/2 ounces
The tag states 11 ounces. It weighs 15 1/2 ounces for the XL. Why don't they tell the truth? Is deception a standard procedure for all Mountain Hardwear gear? The jacket is stiff feeling and crackles when it moves. The pockets are mesh and are rather large. The fit is long enough to cover your rear. The pit zips are long, but the zippers catch in the inside coating, so you have to take off the jacket to close the zippers. During a rain, there was moisture on the inside coating, but not enough to get me wet.
Lightweight but poor breathability.
Lightweight, nice hood, good freedom of movement, and more durable than I expected. I find the fit is a bit wide and too short, often leaving mid layers exposed at the front. I have been disappointed with the breathability, with the inside being wet from condensation every time I have worn it in the rain. Good as an insurance piece, but if I expect prolonged rain, I'd choose something more breathable.
Shopping Experience
....The material and construction of this jacket is as described - it would have served my purpose wonderfully -buuuut, I had to wait for the item to be shipped because it was on "backorder", waiting was not a problem because I knew about the wait when I purchased the item - my problem was with the item I received, I ordered black/lapis XL and received lapis/black SMALL - essentially istead of a black jacket I received a blue one that was 3 sizes too small.... bummer! Had to return it - altrec paid for return shipping by sending me a return label via email - I decided to purchase the North Face Venture jacket from a competitor (I called the competitor and they gave it to me for the price of the epic and upgraded my shipping to 3 day) - my timeframe required a faster turnaround than waiting another 2 weeks for delivery of a replacement Epic from altrec.
