A compact and ergonomic solution for commuters who extend oil-free Wednesdays into the other six days of the week, the Osprey Flux backpack combines school and business pack designs with backcountry-ready components. The padded laptop sleeve and deluxe internal organizer hint at an orientation more towards business than academic efforts, but many students find that laptops are standard equipment on campus these days. Whether it's school or business, swap out your laptop for a hydration pack and you'll find an exit port and hose guides that can help keep you hydrated on weekend day hikes. Along the sides you'll find a roomy pocket for your 32-oz. water bottle and a smaller quick-access compartment for your cellular phone. Aside from reduced dimensions, the Osprey Flux backpack is similar in features to the Osprey Focus backpack. Like all Osprey backpacks, the Flux backpack emphasizes ergonomic comfort through a molded ventilation backpanel backed by a rigid framesheet.

Have carried a Timbuk2 messenger bag for 8-years and have just purchased the Osprey Flux for an upcoming trip. It is so easy to carry and fill that I am using it now for day-to-day travel from home to office. This should break it in too and soften it up. The reviews I read promised great things from this pack and they appear to be confirmed from my three weeks of use. The Flux has an amazing assortment of interior compartments for small items. Plus, the three major compartments are easily accessible from the exterior. The design is outstanding and the black/grey model is sophisticated.

Having traveled a million air miles in 20 years with a series of packs from top brands, this is far and away the BEST! It has a perfect place for everything I carry, protects my laptop completely, fits under airline seat easily, feels lighter than other packs i've used due to comfortable straps and belt, and flexes to carry full or partial loads equally well. The zippers and pulls are strong and easy. Today on a trip another flyer asked me about the pack...that hasn't happened for a while. On top of that, it looks great...I can't think of a thing i'd change.

Just the right size for a laptop, files and books for several days out of the office without feeling too big. Many of the competitive bags are bulky and feel overweight even when empty.

One of the nicest packs that I have ever owned. I started looking for a new pack after I got my laptop and came across the Osprey Flux. This pack fits my laptop perfectly and still has plenty of room for the other things that I carry to and from work and on the weekends when I am traveling. I really like the small feel that this bag has, but it has tons of room to get everything for a day hike in it or for carrying things around campus. The thing that I really like are all of the big pockets in this bag, it really allows you to organize the gear that you are carrying around. I think one of the only draw backs on this pack are the small water bottle pockets that is has. It is hard to fit a standard 32 oz water bottle in the pockets, besides that no other real complaints on this pack. I would highly recommend it to anybody looking for an active pack to use for work, school, or day hikes.

I got the Flux Daypack for my new Mac Book. I wanted someting that I could use on campus but could also be used outdoors. It has plenty of storage for books or gear and it has great back support for hiking and other outdoor uses. It is great.

I use my Osprey Flux for commuting to/from work (with a laptop). The built-in laptop sleeve is a great feature to keep it contained, leaving plenty of room for the other stuff.
CC - 2007-02-17Excellent but Small
This is a great backpack. Just beware that the backpack straps on the pack is attached about 2 inches below the top of the pack, making the fit a bit shorter than similar sized packs like the Talon. I fit a S/M on the Talon but the S/M on the Flux fits short, so I'm returning mine to exchange for a M/L (which is 2 inches longer).Otherwise, the pack is very comfortable for a women's body and the main compartment is nicely padded. The computer sleeve fits up to a 15" laptop and is easy to access. Lots of other pockets to organize all my gear including a top zipped pocket for my ipod/sunglasses. This pack is a lot of comfortable than my swiss army or REI computer bag. Plus the width is just right to fit under the seat (the Tumi and Swiss Army packs tend to be a bit wide and I have to really wedge it under the seat on certain airplanes).
LS - 2007-01-24Great pack but has an issue.
My MP3 player lives in my backpack so I thought I would get this one seeing as how it has a pocket specificly for an MP3/CD player. But that pocket is also the lid for the laptop pocket. This creates problems when trying to get out your laptop with a bulky 40 gig zen in the way. Other than that it's an absoloutly awesome pack. Fits really tight to your back and makes an excelent urban bike riding pack. Has plenty of nifty pockets and will keep your stuff dry when walking/riding in a light downpour.
Mark Stewart - 2006-03-06very good, but room for improvement
I started looking for backpacks with a strict criteria - I needed a decent sized day pack which was comfortable for riding (I ride my pushie to and from work), I also needed a laptop sleeve. After heaps of searching I found the flux. I have a big laptop (dell inspiron 6000) so I thought it best to go to a store to check it out in person to make sure it fits, etc. I found it very comfortable even with my laptop strapped in. The compartments are relatively spacious. Compared to my previous daypack - northface recon - it seems a taller, but also thinner (ie it doesn't protrude far out from your back) - meaning once you have a laptop in, there's not much space for bulky items. You could probaby fit in another set of clothes for an overnight stay, not much else though. I do miss having a stretcheable mesh front to whack a jacket/helmet in, etc. but it doesn't really worry me. Overall it's fit my criteria nicely - a few adjustments and you'd have a little gem. This is the best I've found amoungst the very limited range of "active" laptop bags!

Step 1 - Pack SizingAll Osprey packs, save the transit bags, are available in multiple sizes to fit a range of torso lengths. To find your torso length, have a friend measure your back along the spine from the level of your iliac crest (the top of your hipbones) to your C7 (the knobby bone at the base of your neck).
Step 2 - Hipbelt SizingTo determine your hipbelt size measure around your hips, not your waist. A properly fitted hipbelt rides centered over the hipbones and needs to be very snug; after all it will be carrying the bulk of the pack's weight. The padded portion should wrap well around your hips, leaving a gap of 3 to 6 inches between the tips of the pads when securely tightened.

ErgoPullNearly all Osprey hipbelts use an exclusive ErgoPull design. It creates mechanical advantage to provide extra leverage in cinching down the hipbelt. The ErgoPull design also draws tension along the top and bottom of the belt, not through the center, so it distributes pressure more evenly over the padding and relieves direct pressure on the hipbones.
Step 3 - Harness
Osprey Crescent & Luna, Aether & Ariel and Waypoint packs offer interchangeable shoulder harnesses. Harness sizing usually corresponds to pack size, but your best bet is to try one on. A properly fit harness should terminate 2 to 3" beneath the armpit. Webbing should not touch the body. By breaking the hook and loop connection and sliding the harness up and down the backpanel the torso length can be adjusted up to 3". (see illustration).

Step 4 - Overall Fit
Once you have the correct size pack, harness and hipbelt, and the torso length set properly, it's time to put some weight in the pack (20 to 30 pounds of well distributed weight will do) and dial in the fit. First, snug down the hipbelt and harness. Connect the sternum strap (A) - position it about 2 inches below your collarbones and snug it down lightly. Finally, tighten the load lifter straps to draw the load solidly against your back. The lift straps (B) should come off your shoulders at a 45 to 60 degree angle in Osprey's ReCurve and Ethereal Suspension packs. In other models these straps serve more as compression straps and ride flatter; they may even angle downwards.
In a good fit, there should be no pressure points and no gaps between your body and the pack. With Osprey's ReCurve packs, final tweaking may involve custom fitting the aluminum stays to your back.
