The North Face Scree Gaiter II

Pebbles. Grit. Cinders. Beauty bark. Ouch. For all the ounces you might try to lose while running, your trail running shoes seem to pick up the extra weight. It might not seem too bad over the first mile or two, but then those minute bits of rock work their way down inside your shoes, impregnating your socks, nipping at your tender arches and wearing away the flesh between your toes. Yuck. The North Face Scree Gaiter II helps keep the trail out of the inside of your shoes, but it doesn't weigh as much or limit your mobility like full-length hiking gaiters. Specifically designed for The North Face Ultra 102 and Ultra GTX running shoes, it features secure hook attachments and a profile that neatly conforms to the natural contours of your ankles. The mesh body fabric enhances airflow better than most traditional canvas or waterproof/breathable gaiter designs. Hit your personal best in trail running comfort today.

  • Features
    • Breathable, durable, open-mesh gaiter repels debris for trail running or adventure racing.
    • UPPER Form-fitting pull-on design
    • Four-point hook attachments
    • Single-hand drawcord closure system
    • Compatible with the Ultra 103 XCR, the Ultra 103 and the Ultra GORE-TEX® XCR

Great for TNF Shoes
These are designed specifically for some of the older North Face shoes and work fantastically in conjunction with the hooks on those. Anything produced prior to this Spring should have the little hooks on the side and back like the Arnuva 100's do, but you won't find many of those out there for sale. You can still make these work for any shoe, you'll just have to get some fishing line or something and run it under your foot like a standard gaiter.

I wouldn't run trails without them.
These things make all the difference in the world. Good runs go bad when dirt and debris work their way into your shoes. The Scree Gaiter II matched with the Ultra 103 XCR is unstoppable.

Great for snow, mud, brush, and oh yes, scree
I wear the scree gaiters with the North Face Arnuva 100 TR GTX running in 50K races. Here are some examples of the scree gaiters doing a great job.1) Race on muddy trails in the dark. My shoes, gaiters, and legs were covered with mud, but when I washed the mud off the outside, then took off the shoes and gaiters I was amazed that my socks were not muddy.2) Running in fresh snow they kept the snow out of the shoe, and thus my feet much dryer.3) In brush they cover my laces, so the brush can not catch a lace and either trip me or untie the shoe. Becaus I do not have to double knot the lace, adjusting the laces based on going up or down hill is much quicker. The only problem was with the Arnuva shoes. The gaiters hook to the shoes using short elastic cords built into the shoe. One of the cords came detached at one end. This was easy to repair with super glue once I got home and dried the shoes. So for the low price these are a great deal. So good that I bought a second pair in case North Face drops this product.

Good Product
Inexpensive solution for keeping rocks/pebbles out of your trail shoes. I'm using them on Asic Eagle III and not on the North Face shoe they were designed for....and they do the job. Light nylon mesh that you cant feel when you're wearing them.

Great gaiter for trail running
I started running ultras and needed a breathable gaiter to keep my feet free from debris. The North Face Scree gaiter is the best product out there, bar none! I use them on a pair of Montrail Hardrocks. I threaded a loops of cord on both sides to hold the side clips. Another option would be to loop a piece of cord under the shoe. Working great for the past 200 miles! In my first 50 miler I didn't have any debris in my shoes!

These are easy to put on
Not sure why some say it they are hard to put on. I just received mine in the mail, used a paper clip to pull out the cord on the shoe, and connected the clip on the gaiter. Anything that I can do in 10 seconds seems easy to me. Just keep a paper clip in your camel back or clip it onto your laces in case you want to put the gaiters on while on the trail.

Good but not general purpose gaiter
These gaiters have hooks that connect to the shoe. They are designed for a few North Face shoes. I have used them with the North Face Ultra 102 running shoe, one of the shoes it is designed for. I have also used them with my Salomon XA Pro running shoes. I did this by creating two loops of cord in the side of the shoe. In both cases they connect to the shoe correctly. There is a problem with the short height of the gaiter. My pant leg tends to pull out of the gaiter when I sit down. However, even if the pant leg pulls out (and I don't notice it), I still get substantially less sticks, rocks, and dirt into my shoe. One advantage of this gaiter is the lightweight. Another advantage is there isn't a cord or strap going under the shoe that can get damaged.Overall, I like this solution. I've been using running shoes rather than backpacking boots for all my hiking and backpacing trips for a few months now (I hike or backpack about 5 days each week) . Running shoes are much lighter and these gaiters resolve one of the disadvantages of running shoes, changing it to an advantage.

great fit and breathability
great product - does exactly what it says it'll do - i was grateful that the photo was slightly incorrect and the gaiter doesnt have the huge North Face logo on it...buch nicer that way.

simple and effective
Although not rocket science, this simple gaiter is effective in doing what it was designed for . . . keeping the crud out of your shoes. Application is well matched with my TNF Ultra GTX and only would question the longevity of the plastic clips. Bottom line -- at $10, these are well worth the price of admission.

Does the job
I actually don't use these totally for running shoes. They are an outstanding alternative to standard high gaiters when using a light trail hiker(snug fit) or climbing shoe. I find often that gaiters are over kill, plagued by over heating/weight, when all you're trying to do is keep the dust and a few pebbles out. These Scree's do the job while mountain rambling........

good, but needs laces!
Only ran with them a couple of times but seem to work fine. A very good value at $12 but I would gladly pay 2 or 3 bucks more if they came with laces so they could be used with other shoes without having to hunt down shock cord or laces.

There useful but.
I used these gaiters for training and noticed that scree was able to get in my shoes though gaps in-between the back hooks. I just modified them with velcro last night for a 102.5 mile trail race in Minnesota.

Over all good product for the price if they stay connected...
I had the old version of TNF Scree gator that actually snapped to the shoe (better design). That being said the one weakness of the new gator is the plastic clip that connects the gator to the shoe. I had trouble with them staying attached. I will say that if they are connected there is nothing getting in your shoe and they did not cause any over heating (I live in the hot humid Georgia)

Good gear but hard to put it on
It does what it's meant to do, keep out debris and small rocks out of your TNF shoes. One of the negatives is it's somewhat difficult to put it on because of the tight cords on the shoes (which the gaiter hools onto) and the gaiter's plastic hook. Second, I am not too sure about the reliability and longevity of the plastic hook. Otherwise, it's a fine product.
